His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces has tasked Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies within the catchment area of the University for Development Studies (UDS) to collaborate with the latter in order to utilize the research findings and /or reports generated from the Third Trimester Field Practical Programme of the University, for developmental purposes.He also announced government’s decision to grant autonomy to the Wa and Navrongo campuses, noting that the move had received cabinet approval and would soon be laid before parliament for further consideration.
The President made these declarations at the 19th Congregation of the UDS, held at the Tamale Campus on Saturday, November 10, 2018.
The Chairman of the UDS Governing Council, Mr. Nutifafa Kuenyehia who welcomed the President paid glowing tribute to individuals and institutions who have in diverse ways contributed immensely towards the growth and development of the UDS since its inception twenty five (25) years ago. Special mention was made of former President Jerry John Rawlings “Whose foresight and determination resulted in the birth of this institution”, he added.
Prof. G. A. Teye, Vice-Chancellor of UDS denied the infrastructural deficit that had bedeviled the University, thus making academic work difficult. He appealed to the government through H. E. the President to grant UDS special assistance to complete the litany of uncompleted structures on the various campuses of the University.
The VC stated that a total of 5,766 graduating students made up of 5,605 diploma and undergraduates and 162 postgraduate students had successfully completed various programmes of study.
